Hi! I’m Howard Qin from Vancouver, Canada. I also lived 13 years in Shanghai. I graduated from Stanford University with a BS in Mathematics (minors in Physics and Music) and an MS in Sustainability. My advisor was Prof. Steven Chu, 1997 Nobel Physics laureate and former US Secretary of Energy (2009-13).
I’ve kept a weather diary for 14 years and was named the youngest-ever member of the Canadian Meteorological & Oceanographical Society (CMOS) in 2017 by Prof. Douw Steyn of UBC. My current focus is in climate adaptation (weather resilience) and planetary intelligence with both technological and financial innovations.
I speak the language of math and science, but I’m also trained in strategy and relations. My experience spans research, leading Stanford climate organizations (SSIG, Stanford Climate Week), building product at an early-stage startup (WindBorne Systems), and writing investment thesis at a climate VC (Lowercarbon Capital).
Besides climate, I’m a classical musician — I play the oboe, compose, and conduct. Most notably, I assistant conducted Mahler Symphony No. 2 and Mozart opera Le nozze di Figaro at Stanford in 2022. I premiered my first symphony, dedicated to Stanford, in 2024. My other hobbies include golfing, skiing, waltzing, and bartending.
